Although this unique resort is in San Pedro, some people say the decorations and the uniqueness of the architecture remind them of Bora Bora. It’s right in the heart of downtown, and beachfront cabanas are perfect for relaxing in.

One of the best parts about this resort is the fun and bright colors. Each room also has murals all over the walls and colorful paintings.
Matachica has top-rated customer service, so you’ll be treated like a king or queen for the entire duration of your stay.
There is a small restaurant on site called Mambo Restaurant. All the menu items are local island favorites made with fresh seasonal ingredients. The resort even has a garden on-site, and some vegetables and herbs are grown right on-site.
The adults-only hotel also has an incredible outdoor pool known for hand-crafted cocktails that will have you enjoying your time in the sun.
PUR Boutique Cabanas
While some of the adults-only options on the island are huge resorts, this place has a different vibe. It’s a boutique hotel with only six cabanas.
They offer free golf cart rides to downtown San Pedro which can be reached in less than 10 minutes.
PUR Boutique Cabanas has been voted one of the best hotels in Ambergris Caye because of its completely unique amenities.
For example, there’s no restaurant on-site, but there is a taco bar where you can build your own tacos. Stuff them full of meats, veggies, cheeses, and other toppings!

- Looking to explore the island in an unconventional way? Ambergris Caye golf cart rentals are a unique activity that allows you to have fun and also see various parts of the island much quicker than walking.
- Go snorkeling. Although scuba diving is a popular activity, snorkeling is even more common because it doesn’t require a certification, and there are snorkeling spots pretty much everywhere. The best one is Hol-Chan Marine Reserve.
- Take a chocolate tour. Belize has some of the best chocolate in the world, and you can take a tour of the cocoa farms as well as sample some delicious treats. Read my detailed chocolate tour guide in Ambergris Caye here.
- Have a night out at Jaguar’s Temple. This is one of the top-rated nightclubs on the island. The indoor part of the club gets super busy and loud. If that isn’t your vibe, you can head to the outdoor part of the club, where they play reggae music.
- Have a drink at Rum & Bean. This fabulous bar has a whole new take on drinks. Most of the cocktails are made with fresh juice with local island fruits, making them extra amazing. They also have a full coffee and tea menu for those who prefer not to drink alcohol.

When to Visit Ambergris Caye
Most travelers recommend you visit Ambergris Caye in the dry season from December to May. Almost every day, it experiences nonstop sunshine and beautiful blue skies during the dry season.
Visiting during the dry season is more expensive since this is when most of the tourists come. Some of the resorts and hotels also get fully booked during this time.
If you’re on a budget, you can come during the wet season, but watch the radars for tropical storms, as this can really damper your vacation.
On the bright side, when no storm is coming, most of the rain comes overnight during the wet season, leaving you plenty of time to swim and suntan during the day.

The best part about San Pedro is that there are budget hotels near the ocean and in the downtown area, so you can find a nice, affordable place to stay in all parts of the island.
Any of the hotels I listed in the budget section are perfect if you aren’t interested in fancy resorts and want a cheap place to rest your head.
