Staying In Acadia National Park

If you prefer to stay inside the park rather than in nearby Bar Harbor, you can stay at one of the park’s campgrounds.

No matter which campground you choose to stay in, you need to make a reservation first. Reservations start two months in advance and cannot be booked before then.

Camping is also not allowed in the winter. Most campgrounds are only open from May to October.

Most of the campsites have staff during the open season, but there are not many amenities in the campsites. You should bring your own food, drinking water, and firewood.

Some of the campsites have flush toilets, but most do not have shower facilities.

Here are the main campsites you can choose from:

  • Blackwoods Campground: This site is on the east side of Mount Desert Island. They have group tent sites and sites for regular tents, motor homes, and campers.
  • Seawall Campground: This is the best place to stay if you want to be by the coastline. They have group tent sites and drive-through camping areas where you can bring a motor home or camper.
  • Schoodic Woods Campground: This is the only campsite in the main area of the park. Since it’s less remote, you can access the internet here, which is rare in other campsites. They also have grills that you can use to cook.
  • Duck Harbor Campground: This campground is on Isle au Haut, which is linked to the rest of the park by boat. There are five lean-to shelters. You’re welcome to bring a tent, but it has to fit inside the shelter and cannot be used outside. They have a hand pump for water, composting toilets, and picnic tables. You have to collect your own firewood here as they do not allow people to bring in wood.
