The Loop

When it comes to the best places to stay in Chicago, it’s hard to top the Loop. This neighborhood truly is the heart of the city and the perfect spot for first-timers.

Staying in the Loop puts you in an ideal location for sightseeing. Here you’ll find some of the city’s most iconic sights, including the Willis Tower and Millenium Park. You’ll save time and money on transportation by staying here as you’ll be able to walk most places.

The Loop is big enough to be split into a few areas. Lake Michigan borders the central part to the east and the river to the north and west. Once you get south of Grant Park, you’re in what’s known as the South Loop. Cross over the river headed west, and you’re in—you guessed it—the West Loop.

How to Get to Chicago

Most visitors arrive in Chicago at one of the city’s two airports. O’Hare (ORD) is the bigger of the two, offering more flight options. Midway (MDW) is primarily a hub for Southwest.

Both airports are connected to the city by the elevated rail system known as the “L.” The blue line serves O’Hare, while the orange line goes to Midway. It takes about 45 minutes to get from either airport to the Loop.

You can also get to Chicago by train from several cities. Trains arrive at Union Station downtown, just a few blocks from the Willis Tower. Check Amtrak for schedules and fares.

Several bus companies, including Greyhound and Megabus, also have routes to Chicago. Be sure to book tickets in advance for the best deal.

Should you choose to drive to Chicago, you will have a difficult time finding parking, and it’s expensive. You don’t need a car in this city as there’s great public transportation. In fact, you’ll have a more enjoyable trip without one!

How to Get Around Chicago

Your best bet for getting around Chicago is grabbing a Ventra pass when you arrive. There are 1, 3, and 7-day unlimited ride passes available for $10, $20, and $28, respectively.

These passes are good for all of the bus and train lines run by the CTA. The train system is known as the “L” because many tracks are “el”-evated. The L will get you just about anywhere you want to go in the city, so you probably won’t need to figure out the bus system.

If you’re staying in the Loop or River North, you can easily walk to most of the major attractions in the city. There’s also the Divvy bike share program, where you can take a single trip for just over $3 or get a day pass for $15.

You can always hail a cab when you don’t feel like walking, pedaling, or taking public transport. Rideshare apps like Lyft and Uber are also readily available in Chicago.

When to Visit Chicago

Unless you enjoy painfully cold weather with stinging winds, it’s best to skip out on winter in Chicago. Sure, you can find plenty of fun things to do indoors, but many parts of the city aren’t that enjoyable in winter.

Summer in Chitown is an exhilarating time with lots of events going on, like Lollapalooza and Taste of Chicago. That said, it can be more crowded and expensive on these popular weekends.

Alternatively, spring and fall are excellent choices if you want to experience the best of the Windy City. Then you can enjoy it in pleasant weather without the crowds.

That wraps it up for this guide on the best places to stay in Chicago. Whether you choose to base yourself downtown in the Loop, along the Magnificent Mile, or up in Lincoln Park, you’re sure to have a great time exploring the Windy City.
